Community-driven

Commu is a community platform for helping and connecting with others. You can download the app for free anywhere in the world. Help can be asked for and given remotely too, from anywhere in the country.

Commu on kotimainen auttamisen sovellus, joka yhdistää auttajan ja avun tarvitsijan.

For everyone

Everyone has different skills, strengths, resources, and needs for support, which vary across different stages of life. Good deeds can be small, everyday neighborly help, brightening someone’s day, or even helping make a dream come true.

Made for connection

In Commu, you can meet others and be met with a low threshold, in a way that fits your own life situation.

Is your city already a Commu partner?

You can download the app for free even if your local municipality isn’t yet a Commu partner.

When a municipality partners with Commu, the local number of community-app users grows, which makes helping and getting help easier. In partner municipalities, the municipality is also visible in the app in various ways, for example through local news and free resident benefits.

You can easily check in the Commu app, under “My area”, whether your local municipality is already a Commu partner. While you wait for a partnership, you can use Commu as usual as a neighborly-help app, and encourage others to join too. The more of us there are, the more the good goes around!

“I recommend the Commu app to everyone — no offer of help or request for help is ever too small to post!”

Vignesh, Helsinki

“I moved to Finland to study, but I didn’t know anyone in my neighborhood. I asked for help on Commu, and several locals helped me. Thank you!”

Marjo, Kangasala

“Giving and helping matter, because it means there are other people to be there for, too.”

Frequently asked questions

Commu is a platform that makes it easy to ask for and offer help in your local area, even remotely. Participants include individuals, employees of socially responsible companies, and organizations. Commu helps build a digital safety net, meet new people, do volunteer work, and get to know local organizations.

Strong authentication is performed through the Signicat service using bank credentials or a mobile certificate. You can find this feature in the Activity Center on the Commun homepage. After authentication, the message “Identity verified” will appear on your profile, and your trust score will increase to 100/100. No one can see your banking or personal information.

Every Commun user agrees to comply with our Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. Violations of the Community Guidelines and/or Terms of Service may result, at the discretion of the moderation team, in a warning, a temporary ban from Commun, or the deletion of the user account.

No one can find you on Commu by your name or email address. When you create a request for help, it appears on the map, and interested users can see your request as well as your public profile, photo, and bio. Other users cannot see your phone number, email address, or location.

You can check a user’s profile to see their activity, recommendations received, and trust rating, and decide to help only verified users. Conversations take place via Comm’s built-in messaging feature, so there’s no need to share phone numbers or social media accounts. Reports and users who violate the Terms of Service are actively addressed.

Confirmation is done by clicking the “Did you get help?” button in the lower-right corner of the chat. When the person who received help confirms the interaction, an entry is logged in both users’ “My Stats.”

Commu is not a freelance platform but is designed for neighborly help and volunteer work. Providing help without compensation is always tax-free, because it does not generate any taxable compensation. Exchanging ordinary, low-value neighborly favors, such as shoveling snow or mowing the lawn, is tax-free.

Peer support is a voluntary, reciprocal exchange of experiences in which people in similar life situations support one another. Sharing common experiences fosters understanding and alleviates anxiety.

Trustworthiness is determined by your profile picture, bio, verified email address and phone number, recommendations you’ve received, and strong authentication. Strong authentication is the only way to earn a perfect score of 100/100. You can check your own and others’ trustworthiness on your profile.

A confirmation link was sent to your email address when you registered. If you can’t find it or it’s been a while since you registered, you can resend the link from the “Settings” section. Email confirmation enhances user security and makes it harder for bots and fake accounts to be used.

User data is transmitted end-to-end encrypted, and sensitive personal data is stored in an encrypted format in a dedicated database. The service uses message-level encryption, SSL security, and a JWK RSA key pair (2048-bit). Commu does not sell personal data to third parties.

We recommend always meeting new people in a public place first, such as a market or a café. If another user causes problems or makes you feel uncomfortable, please contact us at company@commuapp.fi or directly within Commun. In an emergency, always call your local emergency number.

Commu is a Finnish startup founded by young entrepreneurs. The service is free for individual users because Commu’s clients are municipalities, businesses, and organizations.

You can delete your account under Settings > Your Information.
